Special Helps from Betty Crocker

Do you know of a modern day cookbook that gives recipes for the whole body. Well Betty Crocker sure does...

Excerpts from page 6 of our Better Crocker's Picture Cookbook (1956) :

If you're tired from overwork,
Household chores you're bound to shirk.
Read these pointers tried and true
And discover what to do.

Wear comfortable clothes and properly fitted shoes while working around the house.

For personal outlook
Eat proper food for health and vitality. Every morning before breakfast, comb hair, apply make-up, a dash of cologne, and perhaps some simple earrings. Does wonders for your morale.

Organize the family to cooperate
Train the children to help with different jobs. Very young children can set and clear the table. Older ones can cook.

Your mind can accomplish things while your hands are busy
Do head work while dusting, sweeping, washing dishes, paring potatoes, etc. Plan family recreation, the garden, etc.

Prevent unnecessary fatigue
Use dust mop and long-handled dust pan. Use self-wringing mop (no stooping).

AND I LOVE THIS ONE

If you feel tired, lie down on the floor on your back, put your hands above your head, close your eyes, and relax for 3 to 5 min. (I'd be begging for trouble if I did this in my house; I'd be likely to lose my life by somebody jumping on me)!

Exercise, sunshine, fresh air are part of health
Get outdoors every day. Take a walk, do some gardening, take the children for an outing, or pay your neighbor a short visit.

If you have just a moment, sit down, put your feet up on a chair, close your eyes and just relax your muscles. Let your arms, hands, and head fall limp.

Good posture prevents fatigue
When standing, keep erect posture...do not slump or bend over tasks (poor posture is more tiring). Remember sitting uses much less energy than standing.

Alternate sitting down tasks and standing up tasks. Don't be on your feet too long at one time.

Check up on yourself
If after following all these rules for proper rest, exercise, diet, you are still tired and depressed, have a medical checkup and follow doctor's orders.

Harbor pleasant thoughts while working. It will make every task lighter and pleasanter.

Refresh your spirits
"Recreation" means "re-create"...for enthusiasm and courage. Garden, paint pictures, pursue any hobby, look through magazines for home planning ideas, read a good book, or attend club meetings.

Notice humorous and interesting incidents to relate at dinnertime when family is together.

  1. So was this one of your humorous dinnertime anecdotes? Some of it is pretty funny, maybe not so realistic, although, they did have some good ideas.

  2. Yes, things have changed. I'd like to steal back *some* of those lost simplicities and focus on what is important ~ family. It is easy to clutter life with useless busyness.
