I was glad to see that our priest was offering the traditional blessing of the wine on the feast day of St. John, December 27. I have read about it in books, but not until this year had it been offered at our parish. It's nice to see rich traditions of the church coming back one by one.
Why the blessing of the wine, you may ask? Rather than have me reiterate, you can find a short form of the "why" here.
My Knight placed 12 bottles in a wicker basket, covered with 2 white linens, and had ours blessed after mass. We didn't want to look like lushes so we went modest on the woven baskets full. If I could have had it my way, I would have lined up the entire length of the kneelers at the front of the church with an entire year's supply!
And as Benjamin Franklin once said, "Wine is constant proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy." So...
...Drink to the love of St. John!
