Pyromaniacs

Pyromania is becoming commonplace at our home. There is an alarming level of fascination around here for fire. At our previous residence, one of our sons lit a bed on fire. Another son moved on to pencils. Now, last night, Gus's dump truck became a rubbish truck. Sure, I hear you...hide the matches. I did hide them. This time the issue was a matter of nimbility (is that a word?) I was taking laundry down just outside the door, which is glass mind you so I can see everything....and the moment my back was turned Gus lit the truck on fire from the scented candle that was burning in the 3 seasons room. I did not see the child enter or exit the room. Nor did I even see that he had left the truck burning on the table. Thankfully Nathaniel discovered it and extinguished the increasing flames. I pray that someday we don't have to use our homeowners insurance due to our spry boys!

  1. That must have been pretty scarey! Maybe it runs in the family? I do recall another young boy in the past who tried to play with matches. It sure is hard some days when the kids are little. I used to thank God at the end of the day that everyone was alive and no one had any major injuries. Even if I didn't feel I got much accomplished, I started looking at that as a major accomplishment. One thing I really enjoy now that everyone is older is being able to burn a candle, especially in the winter, for the nice aroma that fills the house. The guardian angels must really be working hard.

  2. Ha! My husband likes fire; so also my children. Camping fires - and then at home my son (17) has set little green army men aflame, a t-rex (which was first gutted with a pocket knife), and last year there was a bad game of catch with flaming tennis balls. One of the boys poured some flammable liquid, which dripped back on his hand, set fire & his hand caught flame. Bad burns. Think they'd learn? Found wax over my counter top - my 17 year old again was lighting tea light candles, blew like the big bad wolf but insists he cleaned it up. Huh.

When I was a teen leader for the youth group, we handed out rosaries & had candles, and don't you know, someone had to start melting the plastic rosaries. Another leader was furious, but having kids like mine, I shook my head, because I should have known better - kids, flame, plastic. Yup.
